Google now answers before your website gets a look. Here is what to do about it
Search for "emergency plumber Liverpool" or "best barber near me" and Google writes you an answer at the top of the page before a single website appears. Whitespark, who track local search for a living, found these AI Overviews now show on 68% of local searches. Ahrefs measured what that does to the sites underneath in February: clicks fall by more than half when an AI answer sits above the results.
Read that as a business owner and the maths is blunt. You can hold the same ranking you held last year and still lose most of the visits, because customers get their answer without scrolling to you.
The part that works in your favour
Google builds those AI answers out of sources it trusts, and it names them. Businesses that get cited inside the answer take more clicks than the ones ranked beneath it; Seer Interactive's analysis this year put the gap at roughly double per impression. The game has moved from "rank on page one" to "be the business the answer quotes".
Three free moves before you spend a penny
- Finish your Google Business Profile. Every field: services, photos, opening hours, service area. The AI answer for "near me" searches leans on Business Profiles harder than on websites. This costs you an evening.
- Answer real questions on your pages. One heading per question your customers ask, with a plain answer in the first sentence beneath it. AI answers quote pages that answer things; they skip pages that only describe things.
- Get reviews with detail in them. "Great service" does little. "Fixed our boiler in Walton the same afternoon" tells Google exactly which searches you belong in. Ask happy customers to mention the job and the area.
When paying makes sense
None of this needs a monthly retainer to start, and if your enquiries are healthy you can stop reading here. Pay when you want the compounding version: pages built question-first across every service you offer, citations kept consistent, reviews engineered into a system rather than an occasional ask. That is what our SEO plans do month after month. If you just want to know where you stand today, the free site check now looks at how AI answers treat your business, and "you're fine, keep your money" remains a result we send.
